October 9th has been designated National Choral Singing Day and choirs up and down the country will be getting together with local Mental Health Associations to promote this message.

 

So, how is choral singing good for your mental health?

  • First and foremost, singing in a choir is fun - it’s an enjoyable way for people to meet and make music together;
  • Positive mental health is achieved through good work-life balance. Singing in a choir s a really enjoyable social hobby and
    positive ‘de-stressor’;
  • Choral singing helps to create nature’s stress reliever ‘endorphins’ - hormones that help us maintain balance in our physical and emotional health;
  • Meeting other people and singing as part of a group reduces isolation and loneliness;
  • Choral singing improves concentration, blocks worry and keeps your mind and body exercised;
  • Research has shown that singing is an excellent way for people to express themselves, creating a greater sense of well?being.

FACT:

A recent European survey found a 100% response to the positive impact choral singing has on general well-being.

People rated the "feel good factor" and social aspect of being in a choir the most important.
