Choir participates in Voices For Galway fundraiser

On the afternoon of Saturday, December 19th, the choir took to the streets for a bout of carol singing as part of the Voices for Galway fundraising effort.

The choir are delighted to be able to support what is a very worthy cause.

About Voices For Galway:

1 in every 335 children born in Galway has Down Syndrome. Everyone with this condition suffers delayed development of speech and difficulty in articulation. Speech and Language Therapy, especially in childhood years, is critical to the development of adequate language skills.

In order to benefit fully from Speech and Language Therapy most children require some level of Occupational Therapy to develop their physical motor skills. Before the commencement of the Voices for Galway project in 2005, there was a three year waiting list for initial assessment for children of school going age; the provision for adults was non-existent.

In response to this crisis the Galway Branch of the Down Syndrome Association formed the Voices for Galway project in 2005 with the goal of directly employing a Speech and Language Therapist to provide for our members.

The project is a collaboration between the Galway Branch of the Down Syndrome Ireland and the newly established Department of Speech Therapy in NUIG. This model allows people with Down syndrome to access Speech and Language Therapy in a state of the art facility in NUIG. In return speech and language students gain clinical experience on site. This entire project is funded through charitable donations and fund-raising by the Voices for Galway project. It receives no state or institutional funding whatsoever.

Choral Singing Is Good For Your Mental Health!

Ireland celebrates World Mental Health Week from 5–10th October 2009 with a national week of choral singing, promoting the message that...

...Choral Singing is good for your Mental Health!

October 9th has been designated National Choral Singing Day and choirs up and down the country will be getting together with local Mental Health Associations to promote this message.

So, how is choral singing good for your mental health?

  • First and foremost, singing in a choir is fun - it’s an enjoyable way for people to meet and make music together;
  • Positive mental health is achieved through good work-life balance. Singing in a choir s a really enjoyable social hobby and
    positive ‘de-stressor’;
  • Choral singing helps to create nature’s stress reliever ‘endorphins’ - hormones that help us maintain balance in our physical and emotional health;
  • Meeting other people and singing as part of a group reduces isolation and loneliness;
  • Choral singing improves concentration, blocks worry and keeps your mind and body exercised;
  • Research has shown that singing is an excellent way for people to express themselves, creating a greater sense of well?being.

FACT:

A recent European survey found a 100% response to the positive impact choral singing has on general well-being.

People rated the "feel good factor" and social aspect of being in a choir the most important.
